Ponggal & Globes...

Today is Ponggal. This festival is celebrated on the 14th of January every year. Pongal has astronomical significance: it marks the beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun's movement northward for a six month period.Pongal signals the end of the traditional farming season, giving farmers a break from their monotonous routine. For Sabahan it's Kaamatan and for Sarawakians it's Gawai. So for's Ponggal. The festival is celebrated for four days. On, the first day, Bhogi, the old clothes and materials are thrown away and fired, marking the beginning of a new life. The second day, the Pongal day, is celebrated by boiling fresh milk early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel - a tradition that is the literal translation for Pongal. People also prepare savories and sweets, visit each other's homes, and exchange greetings. The third day, Mattu Pongal, is meant to offer thanks to the cows and buffaloes, as they are used to plough the lands. On the last day, Kanni Pongal, meant especially for young single ladies. The celebration is mega in India. In Malaysia...such celebrations can be sighted at estates or Indian villages.
This was sent to me by my sis via mail...celebration of Ponggal at my new home in Penang ;)

Here's wishing all my indian friends...

May this Pongal fill your life with sweetness! May the sun radiate peace, prosperity and happiness in your life on PONGAL and always! Like a bright and beautiful Kolam may your days be sprinkled with joy and happiness! May the Pongal bring in new hopes and good harvest for you!As you joyfully celebrate the festival of Pongal and welcome the harvest season, this greeting is being sent your way, to wish you everything, that the occasion is meant to bring.
~Have a Happy Pongal~

Another great news...India's A.R. Rahman won a Golden Globe for his score in Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" on Sunday, becoming the first Indian composer to strike gold at the annual Hollywood awards.Such a proud moment ;) 'Slumdog Millionaire is Mumbai-based fairy tale set on the gritty streets of Mumbai. It went home with four Golden Globe awards, and became the movie to beat at the Academy Awards.

I was sad neither Ms Jolie nor Mr Pitt won for Changeling and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Alas...i'm looking forward to Oscars and for sure watching Ms. Jolie's brilliant performance on screen here in Malaysia when the movie opens on 15th January.

Ponggal Nal Valthukkal ;)

Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us~Oscar Wilde

My handsome (late) father The loving couple...(i admired them and still do...)

Daddy's gal...( i was more like a son kan.....hehehehe..perasan...eldest kan...biasa laa...)

Pictures worth a million words that bring my soul to tears. I study each one carefully replaying the memories in my mind looking for clues of what the future would hold and the heartache it would leave behind Beautiful memories are the fabric of our past..
